BIG STAR: NOTHING CAN HURT ME - SCREENING AND MINI ACOUSTIC CONCERT - NUART THEATRE - LOS ANGELES-7/6/13

"I never travel far, without a little Big Star" The Replacements

Tonight we attended a special screening of the excellent new documentary "Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me" at the Nuart Theatre in Los Angeles. The film chronicles the trials and tribulations of the band Big Star which many consider to be the forefathers of modern day alternative rock. Numerous bands cite Big Star as a major influence even though the band never achieved the commercial success that they deserved. The film features interviews and rare behind the scenes footage of the somewhat tragic story of the Memphis band. We both highly recommend the film.

Big Star drummer Jody Stephens and the film's director Drew DeNicola did a brief 20 minute Q & A after the film. Most of the questions from the capacity crowd focused on lead singer Alex Chilton who has become somewhat of a mysterious cult hero over the years. The real highlight of the evening though was the mini acoustic concert that started after the Q & A.  Jody Stephens was joined by onstage by Jon Auer who played with Stephens in the reformed Big Star for over 18 years. We shot the video below of their haunting performance of the classic Big Star song "Thirteen." Jon Auer is on lead vocals, Jody Stephens on the tambourine, Jason Hiller is on bass and Luther Russell on guitar.

I was lucky enough to say hello and snap a photo with Jon Auer. Not only was Jon a member of Big Star for 18 years but he is a founding member of The Posies who are one my favorite bands.
